Law School UPDATE
BERKELEY, Calif. -- I'm about to put a $200 check for my second deposit to Pepperdine University in the FedEx box. This pretty much seals the deal, folks.

More on the Bay Area to come. Laters.

Way To Be On Top Of Things, Chance
Mizzou's intrepid chancellor sent out an e-mail to everyone on campus today keeping us posted on the SARS threat.

Holy April, Batman. Glad to see we're prepared.

Coming In September: MU Monkeypox quarantine.

Travels
OROVILLE, Calif. -- This post comes to you from the Oroville branch of the Butte County Public Library. If neither Oroville nor Butte County ring bells, pull out your road atlas, find California, and look about 90 miles north of Sacramento.

Or, alternately, imagine Jefferson City without state government. Or perhaps Boonville without a casino. You've got Oroville. But, really, it's a nice little town, as far as I can tell. I haven't been sacked by a gang of marauding crusaders yet.

Some notes from the travel log:
**One of the United Express maintenance workers "fixing" something on the regional jet before departing Milwaukee at 5:20 a.m. was wearing the highly professional uniform of jean shorts and a Pittsburgh Steelers t-shirt. Classy.

**Chico Municipal Airport could give Columbia Regional a run for its money in the "Most Like The Airport On Wings" category. For instance, at the Chico airport, there is no baggage carousel, they just sort of line up your bags on this platform and you pick them up. (Photo pending.) There are also no restrooms in the terminal, rather, four strategically located port-a-johns along the dropoff road (funny how you're not allowed to park your car in the terminal roadway, but port-a-potties are OK.)

That's all the observations so far--after all, I've only been here for three hours. If I get back to the library tomorrow, you'll get more...or maybe not.

In Case I Forgot
Happy Birthday, Goodloe.

Confidential to Purschwitz
Is 319 eastern Iowa?? (I haven't looked, promise.)

Scrap-O
Assuming your cell phone number is the same, I'll give you a call soon. I'll be in the Bay Area Sunday through Tuesday (leaving Wednesday morning.)

Time to get back into the Ford Taurus rental and cruise the mean streets of Butte County. Peace.

OSTW UPGRADE
Ever wonder what the crap I drone on about actually looks like? Well, wonder no more! OSTW, with the help of a Canon© PowerShot A70 digital camera, is unveiling a brand new, low-tech PHOTO ARCHIVE. We're sure you have tons (three) questions about this, so let's get to the queries!
Q: Where are the photos?
A: They're at this link. Soon, the link will show up on the left. And, it's relatively easy to remember.
Q: Golly gee! Can I look at these with a dial-up connection?
A: With lots of patience, sure. But, the image sizes are big, so OSTW recommends DSL, cable, or your high-speed connection at work. We promise not to post anything that would get you fired.
Q: That camera must have a pretty spiffy movie feature. Any chance of seeing "talkies" in the archive?
A: You bet your Gedney! Except you *really* won't be able to get to those with dial-up, unless you have two hours to kill.

So, check out the photos. They do a body good.

Polski Festski (Or, Anything Sponsored By Imported Deli Ham Has To Be Cool)
Polish Fest with Big Poppa and Goodlovin can best be summarized with the photos in the archive, but it should be noted that Goodloe was a sport with trying the Polish food, but her refusal to polka with me (or anyone else, for that matter) left me with a little empty feeling in my heart. She should have been ticketed by the Polka Police (actual old people, two to dance, one on the accordion, who walk around in Polka Police uniforms and force you to polka on the spot.)

No, No, A Real Newspaper
I'm used to seeing the names of people I know in the Missourian and Maneater. But seeing Goodloe's name on 1A, above the fold this morning on my driveway, and Pat Healy's name in the New York Times make me proud to be a Mizzou J-school kid.

Enjoy the photos. More to come after the upcoming California trip.

Screw k-uuuuuuuuuuuuuuu (But Save The Bucks)
I hope this doesn't happen.
Otherwise I'll have to go back to being a Sonics fan.

The Long Road Home
PITTSFIELD, Ill. -- Just west of the center of town on U.S. 54, I pulled into a Hardee's ("Where Dave Alexander Loves The Star") for my first food of the day, at 8:00 p.m. As I turned off the car, the cassette deck, which was currently nursing the adapter tape for my Walkman, made a noise more annoying than KOMU's Booger.

Ok. Not as annoying as KOMU's Booger. But close on the list.

To this day, the tape will not eject nor play. The Booger noise (ha!) only goes for about 10 seconds after trying to play or eject the tape. For a few frightening minutes, the radio did not work due to my own stupidity. The thought of driving 5 hours through rural Illinois and southern Wisconsin with nothing but the voices in my head to keep me company could have pushed me over the edge.
Turns out, I actually heard myself on the radio three times on the way home, when KMOX played my stories from the Capitol. For all this time, I had the inkling that maybe, just maybe, the Mighty MOX thought I sucked and never actually used my stuff. Worries gone.

To Be Enthusiastic, You Must Act Enthusiastic
WAUKESHA, Wis.--The 2003 WILS Seminar, my first as a facilitator (small group leader over the age of 21), was moving beyond the point of words. To South Africa 2003, you've meant as much to me as I hope the weekend meant to you.
Sappy, I know. But unless you've had the WILS experience, you just can't understand....
(Of course, the Brewers game with Tra was an extra bonus...) ;-)

And The Victory Tour Begins...
MILWAUKEE -- With drinks at Von Trier, food and drinks at Pizza Man, Webb's with Big Poppa, and whatever else may come (probably the BA crew and Goodloe....) And right now, keeping the 50,000 watt love pump that is Newsradio 620 WTMJ happily humming along the airwaves.
Mmmm. Good to be back.

More Milwaukee exploits to follow. And when it comes to the sausage race at Miller Park: *always* bet on bratwurst.

Journal Non-Communications
Just because you're spending the summer "copy editing" at Wisconsin's "biggest daily" isn't an "excuse" to stop "updating" your blog.

No, commenting doesn't count. The people want posts, dammit!

And why does the OSTW site tracker say you're connecting via a Midwest Express domain name? Was copy editing for free taking such a toll that you're loading baggage at the airport on the side for extra cash?

Yea, I could've just e-mailed this to the Big Poppa. But I'm short of material, and he needs a public reprimand for falling behind. Goodloe can update her blog, and she's already had bylines.

Grumble.

Mizzoupoly
Clark's admonition to never play the Mizzou version of Monopoly³ (to which I would link, if I was not a lazy bum) got me thinking: What Mizzou properties would I never buy due to crappy memories?
1. Engineering Building West, home of CECS 103 and basically just a big hunk of space in between FARC and Twain food.
2. Brady Commons, which smells bad and looks ugly. Also, MSA lives there.
3. Physics, where I have had to endure 4 things:
a. A Jill McR orientation during Summer Welcome,
b. Spanish placement testing,
c. The Warm Little Pond,
and d. LSAT...times two.

How Columbia Are You?
After a pre-dawn breakfast at The Diner, I drove to Level 6 (Yellow) of Hitt Street Garage to watch the sun rise over CoMo. It's the most transcendental thing one can do in town, short of moving to Twain for two weeks.

I'm gonna miss this place. But not so much that a few weeks of Milwaukee and a week of California don't sound damn good right now. Peace.

The Week That Was
The biggest excitement of the week was Thursday at the capitol, when the Senate President Pro Tem, Gov'ner Bob, and the House Speaker gave their speeches to a packed gallery that was so hyped up, you'd think the House chamber was the Hearnes Center.

Seriously. The pro-Republican side wore red t-shirts, the pro-Democrat side wore white. The pro-Republican side chanted "No New Taxes" and "O.T.B." The pro-Democrat side chanted "Hol-DEN!" and also unfurled a big banner at the end of Gov'ner Bob's speech.

There was also a sassy woman who hollered an "Amen!" and other zingy one-liners during the Governor's speech.

Actual content was predictably ideological, along party lines. But the atmosphere made for a great news story--definitely unlike the everyday in Jeff City.

So As You Can See
Not much happened this past week, other than covering special session and continuing to fight off this cold of mine.

Oh, the Booger did show up at Becker's Better Barbeque. That threw me off.

J-Wo's 2003 Victory Tour (Milwaukee, C'mon And Raise Up)
Take your shirt off, twist it round yo' head....you know the drill. Goodloe gets the credit for the apt naming of my post-graduatory (is that a word?) return to the 262 and 414. (Credit for "J-Wo" as a nickname goes to KOMU's own Ida, of course.)
And, if you want to be extra KOMU-tastic, you'll say twenty-oh-three.

If you're in Columbia now, but won't be from July 8th through July 31st, it's your duty to say goodbye. Before Wednesday. Holla.

Law School UPDATE
University of California, Davis: DENIED

What This Means
I've now heard back from each of the schools I applied to. Shall we recap?
ACCEPTED: Mizzou, Pepperdine
WAITLISTED: Temple, UW-Madison
DENIED: Georgetown, UC-Davis

I did not submit a deposit to Mizzou by its deadline, so my choice is effectively narrowed to Pepperdine, with Temple and UW-Madison waiting in the wings.

ChChChChChaaaaaaanges (Time To Face The Change)
New blogs, old blogs I haven't gotten around to slapping on here, and dead blogs mean ch-ch-chaaaaanges in the blog link bar (to the left, to the left.) Sorry to Fiscus and Pat for taking approximately 9 years to post your little slices of paradise on this dirtrag.

Nothing Ever Happens On Mars (BO-ring, BO-ring, BO-ring)
This past week:
**Worked 40.6 hours at KOMU. (27 at the assignment desk, 4 as morning prompter/recuts, 9.6 producing one helluva Friday Ten.)
**Went to Field House, the Vu, and Addison's with KOMU "gang."
**Hung out with Jill, Drew-boy and Britt.
**Came down with a (persistent) cold on Friday night.
**Slept.

The House And Senate Are Now In Session
This week, I'll be in Big Jeff covering the budget boondoggle--special session time at the capitol. While the special session costs the state some-thousands of dollars per day, it means I'm getting paid 7 bucks an hour CBS-style, as opposed to 5.15 an hour KOMU-style. Thanks, Gov'ner Bob. You're creating economic opportunities for at least one poor schmo.

Milwaukeeans (Holla to tha 262 and tha 414)
Arrival into the Brew City: June 11th.
HOBY/WILS/TRAIL/whatever: June 12th-15th, seminar counselor for the kiddies.
Around town, bother me: June 16th-25th.
California, Sarah's wedding & hangin' with Steph: June 26th-July 2nd.
Around town, bother me s'more: July 2nd-July 8th(ish).
