Crimson...and clover...over...and over...
MADISON, Wis. -- The Contracts Study Convoy is rolling on, as Finals II: Back With a Vengeance prepares for its Wednesday-through-next-Friday run. Maybe more like the Leaky Contracts Dinghy Slowly Floating Out To Sea. Or perhaps the Contracts Study Bus Stalled On the Green Goblin's Train Crossing.

Okay, okay. I'll quit with the transportation metaphors already.

Depressing Personal Crap, Part Two
My brother Geoff, age 51, died after a sudden, massive heart attack. I guess all of my siblings are somewhat more like aunts and uncles to me, since they're so much older than I am (they're my dad's kids from his first marriage). They had already up and moved to California (I think) by the time I stumbled onto the scene, so it took me a while to figure out I had brothers and sisters.

The good (?) news is that Geoff, like 3/4 of the Woodward kids, calls the L.A. area home, so I'll have no problem making it to the services and being with the family. Yet another Depressing Woodward Family Reunion.

Here's what I want to figure out. Can we please stop killing off my immediate family members within a week of finals? At this rate, there won't be anyone left to watch me graduate. I don't even want to think about what wrath the bar exam will unleash.

From now on, you must all spend the last two weeks of April and the first two weeks of December in the hospital. It's for your own good, people.

Holla from the 6-0-8
MADISON, Wis. -- I had two options for the weekend: go nuts studying in Malibu, by myself, where I could easily be distracted, or spend a few days in Madison with Tra who would keep me from too much distraction (such as, you know, blogging.)

Thanks to Orbitz and a very nice Haitian cab driver, here I am, working on my contracts outline at 10:30 p.m. on a Friday night, with the girl, who's buckling down for the landscape architecture version of hell week.

From Louisiana to Nevada
Tra alerted me to this site, documenting many (but not all) of Missouri's, ahem, geographically challenged towns.

The really sad thing is that these two poor schmos spent part of their summer trolling around Missour-uh during the stanky, sweaty summertime taking their picture next to MoDOT signs. Whatever tickles your pickle, I suppose.

Geographical challenges, part two
My law school loans are through the innocuous sounding Access Group. The Group persists in sending my mail to Malibu, MO 90265.

Turns out the Group is actually the Kentucky Higher Education Student Loan Corporation (motto: We Done Got Your Money Right Har, Boy). So much makes sense now! Can I repay my massive debt in moonshine?

Remember, Kentucky is where education pays!

(Apologies to native Kentuckians.)

Someday I'll Stop Posting Links About Dean Starr
New York Times Magazine interview yesterday.
I'll be a fan of the guy as long as he gets us some more damn parking spaces. F@%!&$ undergrads.

The Journal Sentinel's take on my new dean, "Shooting" Starr
On the Apr. 10, 2004 editorial page
The Starr of Malibu. Patience pays. In 1997, when he was leading the investigation of President Clinton and the so-called Whitewater scandal, Kenneth Starr was offered a job as dean of the law school at Pepperdine University. The school, in Malibu, Calif., has a warmer climate, meteorologically and in other ways, than Washington, D.C. Starr initially grabbed the offer but changed his mind following criticism that he was abandoning an important job. This week, it was disclosed that Starr has once again been offered the dean's job at Pepperdine, with no apparent impediment to his acceptance. The announcement should send a message to all those windblown, surfing, wannabe lawyers in the Malibu area: The special prosecutor is about to make his appearance at last. Mend your ways, tell the truth and crack those books.

AP-BRF STARR PEPPERDINE
Kenneth Starr named dean of Pepperdine law school

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Kenneth W. Starr, who led the investigation into President Clinton's relationship with Monica Lewinsky, has been named dean of the Pepperdine University School of Law, a school official said.

Starr first accepted the position in 1997 ago but changed his mind after he was criticized for abandoning the Whitewater investigation into the Clintons' real estate dealings.

The appointment, which was to be officially announced Tuesday, followed a more than six-month national search, said Brad Cheves, the university's vice president for advancement and public affairs.

Starr, a longtime guest lecturer at Malibu-based Pepperdine, was acting as independent counsel when he led the Lewinsky investigation, which ended with the first impeachment of a president since 1868.

He has since has argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and taught at New York University Law School.

Starr, a partner at Kirkland & Ellis in Washington and former federal appeals court judge and U.S. solicitor general, will begin work at Pepperdine on August 1.

For Drew Boy, et al.

This pretty much sums up the Cardinals' performance today.

Brewers 8, Cardinals 6.

Wah, wah!
I'm just now reading through this week's Graphic, better known as "Pepperdine's Maneater," and had to share this tidbit from an "ask the senior" column:

"Sororities and fraternities are great, but if you join one don't let your friends comprise solely of your Greek brothers or sisters. Looking back, my closest friends have come from diverse fraternities and sororities."

Hoo dang!

And the time stamp is correct. It's 3:43 in the A.M.

You're watchin' Perspectives!

It's Opening Day! Hooray! Hooray!
Brewers at Cardinals, 1:10 p.m. PDT. As soon as I get home from Torts...the broadband fun shall begin. Hooray for MLB.TV!

Ooooh...and the Bucks are in the playoffs. It's a good day to be a Milwaukee sports fan.

We're 99
Pepperdine has cracked into the second tier of law schools. No more basement dwelling for us! I bet Clark Kellogg would call us the next Gonzaga.

We should find out this week if Kenny-Ken-Ken-The Independent-Counsel-Man will be our next dean. Popular bet around here is that he will be.
